Lincoln Pioneer Village
I always enjoyed going to historical sites with my family growing up as a kid. In fact, I visited here as a kid in fourth grade on a field trip while attending a Warrick County school when learning Indiana history. So I guess it’s in my blood. After moving to Spencer County in 1992, I eyeballed the Lincoln Pioneer Village & Museum that enticed me to become involved. I would drive by, not seeing much going on at the village that had been here since 1935. But in 2006, I stopped by when the place was open on weekends or by appointment only and spoke to Jane Hodges who was volunteering that day.
I attended my 1st “Friends of the Village” meeting in August 2006 and the rest is history. I volunteered here helping with events, reworking displays in the museum on days I was off work, and grew the passion for the place to become an attraction like it was meant to be. In 2018 I left my full-time job to accept the Director position. I focused on making the place a success by bringing visitors to Rockport to actually put their hands on history and be inspired to walk through the attraction, plus the county museum has turned into a place worth seeing. Visitors can come to experience how life was when the Lincolns lived in Spencer County and we are keeping Abe’s legacy alive for future generations, right here in Rockport.
I can proudly say we are helping restore, preserve and protect this Southern Indiana treasure. With the success of visitation, new displays, major restorations on the cabins, and having folks leave with a “Wow” factor and experience they can talk about, my vision is coming true. It’s been a great challenge and I feel I am accomplishing all that I set out to do.
